JS Power Returns from Uganda
Brief:
A local school wished to help their partner school in rural Uganda. Funds will be limited to whatever the children can raise through sponsorship.
The Wolfreton Language College located in Willerby and Kirk Ella near Hull, has recently performed a series of charity sponsored events to bring power to a partner school in Uganda.
The Rushanje Girls Secondary School, located 9 hours outside of Kampala, is so isolated that there is no mains electricity and no running water in the local area.
5 Years ago The Wolfreton School donated a small single phase diesel generator to the school to power the lights in the classrooms for a few hours every day. The generator has broken down, several times and now is no longer serviceable. The school has now had to resort back to paraffin lamps.
Working closely with Wolfreton School, JS Power has matched pound for pound the money raised by the local school children to purchase a larger diesel/ biodiesel generator that will allow more of the schools buildings to have electrical power. As the project progressed, it was decided to expand the project to help provide electricity to the school for more than a few hours a day.
The school day starts for the Rushanje children at 5.30am and the last class starts at 9:45pm, Monday to Friday.
Working with both our suppliers and our customers, we all helped to bring power to this remote school in rural Uganda.
Our engineers headed out to install and commission the generator, they also, whilst out there, installed a battery inverter system. While the generator is running, batteries can be charged up so that when the generator is switched off, the school can then switch to its inverter system and still light up the classrooms.
While out there, our engineers also started to rewire certain parts of the school and to install an electrical supply to parts that didn’t have it. In order to get the most economical use of the system, JS Power also supplied energy efficient light bulbs, and fittings.
Our engineers also trained the schools staff in the safe operation and maintenance of the entire system. Two years of filter kits have been left for the newly trained staff to perform full preventative maintenance on the generator.
As mentioned we would like give a big thank you, to all the companies who have helped in bringing this project together from customised switchgear and an inverter system to transportation.
The Rosebery Group (suppliers of Switchgear), The Warrant Group (for smooth and effortless movement), Definition Web Design (Website Design), Sign Art (Wrapping of the generator), Bioener G (suppliers of Biodiesel), Pelican Engineering (Suppliers of the Invertor System), Sharron Pattison Group (Suppliers of all UK transport) and many others who have donated their time, expertise and products to accomplish this task.
